History of the today’s Hotel "Am Bayrischen Platz"

The opening of the railway station Bayrischer Bahnhof in 1844 resulted in the course of time in a busy traffic. Nearby the tradesman Georg Müller built in 1862 an exclusive house like a villa.
From the beginning the so-called "Hochstein" not only was a quarter for train travellers who came from or went to the south. Also the garden restaurant and the wine tavern were a centre of attraction for a lot of families of Leipzig.
Most different clubs and societies had there meetings in the "Hochstein", for instance the Russian Academic society (after 1900). Its most famous guest was Karl Marx in 1874.

  • 1862 the house was built by the tradesman Georg Müller.
  • 1865 Friedrich Wilhelm Heymann, one wholesaler for handcrafted articles bought the house.
  • 1872 purchase by the restaurant manager and restorer Louis-Ferdinand Hochstein who operated the "Hotel Hochstein" until 1872.
  • from 22 to 24 September 1874 Karl Marx and his daughter Eleanor stayed in the "Hotel Hochstein". The so-called "Karl Marx Room" is nowadays still open for visits and can be booked, of course.
  • 1879/81 take-over by Christian-Gottlieb König.
  • 1888 it was left to the hotelier W. Große and in the same year to C.F. Mertens.
  • 1898 Mrs A. Matusch became owner of the hotel.
  • Max Passig was manager of the hotel.
  • From 1949 the house was passed into the administration of the city Leipzig and beginning in the 50th used by the "Großhandelsorganisation"(wholesale organisation HO).
Until 1989 Manfred Ernst was the hotel manager.
  • 1995 - 1997 Family Groß from Frankfurt (Main) restored the building listed as a historic monument with intense expenditure.
